Department and your function as Process Technology Intern

The Process Technology department develops and optimises processes and is the centre of process technology expertise within Duiker. The department comprises innovative engineers who design, realise and improve unit operation and processes for various ammonia applications, including ammonia cracking and combustion.

As part of our efforts to drive sustainability, we have developed a new process for cracking ammonia to produce hydrogen, with the ammonia cracking reactor at the heart of this process. This internship focuses on reactor modeling, with an emphasis on numerical aspects such as grid convergence and the optimization of existing models developed by Duiker. Additionally, it explores alternative reactor design concepts. The primary objective is to leverage the current reactor model to evaluate the most promising configurations that enhance heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and overall efficiency, ultimately maximizing hydrogen yield for next-generation designs.

Key Activities

• Gain a thorough understanding of Duiker’s existing reactor model in Aspen Custom Modeller and develop proficiency in its use.
• Perform a grid convergence study to assess the granularity and accuracy of the current model.
• Identify the most promising reactor configurations. Build and refine reactor models to simulate performance and evaluate design alternatives.
• Adapt and simulate these designs using the model, assessing key performance metrics such as heat transfer efficiency, fluid dynamics, and hydrogen yield.
• Provide actionable recommendations for design and operational improvements based on simulation results and analysis.

What do we ask of you?

We expect that you are intrinsically motivated and able to manage yourself. Have an affinity for technically challenging tasks and can present and discuss results clearly and concisely. Candidates with the following would be highly preferred:

• You are currently working towards an BSc or MSc in Chemical Engineering, Process Technology, Chemistry or similar discipline.
• You have experience in using process modelling tools (Aspen Plus, Aspen Custom Modeller)
• You have experience in coding environments (Python, Visual Basic, …) and numerical techniques.
• You are skilled in reporting methods and information processing.
• You have excellent skills in the English language.

What do we offer?

• The stipend indication is between € 350,- and € 500,- gross per month depending on level of education.
• A very challenging position in an ambitious organization with a nice and informal working atmosphere and appropriate training to develop your skills further.
